A long time ago a gentle morther was busily cleaning her house in preparation for Christmas Day. Not a speck of dust was left. Even little spiders were banished from the cozy corners and fled to the forgotten attic.
Christmas Eve arrived, alsong with decorated trees and excited children. The poor spiders were frantic, not able to enjoy the magic of the season. The oldest and wisest spider suggested to hide in the threshold until everyone was asleep to view the wonders of the tree.
Once all was quiet, the little spiders crept downstairs. Their tiny eyes could only see one ornament at a time on the towering tree. They scurried up the trunk, dancing thru the branches inspecting the ornaments all night long, leaving a trail of dusky, gray web on each branch.
Santa smiled to see the delighted spiders, but saddened for the mother to see the dusty tree. With the morning sun shinning thru the window, he touched the branches, turning each web to a sparkling silver and gold. The tree glistened in beauty.
According to legend, this was the beginning of hanging tinsel on Christmas Trees.
